Derek Hemsley is the Director of Hems Hockey. His journey began in the Yukon, where his father cultivated his love of the game at an early age. His father inspired and encouraged his transition from playing to coaching. Derek's passion for coaching, leadership, and player development has grown exponentially, leading to the creation of Hems Hockey, which specializes in high-performance hockey and leadership consulting.
Derek completed a Master's in Coaching and Athletics Administration from Concordia University, Irvine. The MCAA program empowers leaders to transform people's lives while pursuing excellence. The MCAA program equipped him to build high-performance human beings whose habits, character, and mindset will be forged, changed, and strengthened for a lifetime of success, fulfillment, and significance.
Derek completed his undergraduate degree at Mount Royal University, majoring in Business and Entrepreneurship - Sport and Recreation. Formerly a Manager for the Volleyball Alberta Association, he oversaw the development, implementation, and management of various high-performance athletic programs. As a result, he gained valuable experience in strategic planning, alignment, and business development.
Derek has over twelve years of high-performance coaching, leadership, and skill development experience from AAA to Junior A. He is High-Performance I certified and a Hockey Canada-certified skills coach. His approach creates an environment that encourages growth, enhances hockey IQ, and provides opportunities for players to lead.
